Maritzburg United and Free State Stars earned a point each when their Absa Premiership match at the Harry Gwala Stadium ended in a 1-1 draw on Friday night.
Both sides went into the match unbeaten in the league this season and maintained their record as Dove Wome cancelled an opener from Mario Booysen, both goals coming in the second half.
The home side saw most of the ball in the first half, but failed to make their possession count as they lacked the creativity to get behind the solid Free State Stars defence.
Ea Lla Koto fired the first shot in anger in the 18th minute through Paulus Masehe, who tried to test the goalkeeper from outside the box, but in the end his shot went wide of the upright.
Ernst Middendorp’s men continued to knock the ball around and in the 26th minute Terrance Mandaza managed to get his shot off from the centre of the penalty area, but his effort lacked pace and in the end it was a comfortable save for Kennedy Mweene.
Both goalkeepers would not have much work to do for the rest of the half with Moeketsi Mvula also shooting wide in the 44th minute to send the two sides into the break with the deadlock still intact.
The away side then threatened to take the lead soon after the break with Masehe firing over the bar in the 46th minute, while Mashego shot wide from the edge of the penalty area two minutes later.
Nevertheless, it was the Team of Choice who opened the scoring in the 70th minute when Delron Buckley delivered an inswinging corner into the box for Mario Booysen to head home at the near post.
The celebrations on the stands didn’t last very long as the visitors found the equaliser just five minutes later through substitute Dove Wome who fired his left-footed shot past Walters from outside the box.
Wome made his presence felt yet again in the 82nd minute through another strike from a similar distance, only for his shot to sail wide of the target.
The final chance of the match fell for Mario Booysen five minutes later as he managed to get his freekick on target but not past Mweene.
