Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga stunned Roger Federer for the second time this summer on Thursday to send the Swiss out in the third round of the Montreal Masters in a 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 6-1.

The loss followed a quarter-final upset staged by Tsonga in the Wimbledon quarter-finals.

Federer lost the first set in Montreal on a tiebreaker but got back into control as he took the second from a break in the fourth game, levelling on the first of three set points.

But Tsonga came out on fire in the third, running away to the victory to move into the quarter-finals on his first set point.

The loss leaves Federer with work to do and little time before next week's Cincinnati Masters, last major tune-up for the US Open starting August 29.
