Always one of the favourites ahead of big tournaments, Germany will once again be one of the teams to beat in South Africa this year.

A well-organised, and tough team to break down, Germany qualified for the 2010 showpiece at a canter, going unbeaten through qualifying in a group including Russia, Finland and Wales.

Champions in 1954, 1974, and 1990, no team has made more World Cup semifinal appearances than Germany (11). What is even more amazing is the 'Nationalmannschaft' usually find a way to win when it really matters - they have reached the knock-out stages of the World Cup the last 14 times the event has been staged.

The current team might not be widely regarded as a 'great one', but only a fool would bet against them being in contention at the sharp end of the tournament.
